ABOUT BRIAN

Brian Nelson has been doing “Good Work” for not-for-profit and non-government organizations as an employee and volunteer for 36 years. Good Work to Brian means service to others that benefits others, improves communities and brings people together to accomplish the common good. Brian’s career has been varied ranging from running a handiman service for the elderly when he was a teen, doing third world development work, being involved in the recycling industry to working with people with developmental disabilities. Brian’s eclectic vocations have supported his tremendous growth as a supervisor, manager and leader. Brian is currently employed at the Camrose Association For Community Living in a senior leadership position where he runs a program for women and children who are at risk and who need some help developing their parenting and family skills.

Brian graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA in Psychology and completed the course work for an MSc specializing in Family Studies. Brian found that his thesis on the effects of living an alternative lifestyle on family dynamics was so interesting, that he put his thesis to the side to live his research. Becoming more heavily involved in the simpler living movement, Brian left academics for a third world development organization focusing on environmental projects.

Brian’s areas of expertise include strategic planning, developing outcome measurements and quality improvement programs. He is a skilled small group facilitator and successful grant writer. Brian has raised over $5,000,000 for various not-for-profits and non- government organizations in his career. Brian has excelled in volunteer recruitment and management and has considerable experience in facilitation and instruction.

Brian has a passion for social justice issues. He believes in the concept of doing “good work”. This is work that benefits others. He believes that volunteerism is the basis of a vibrant and caring community and is an active volunteer in his church and community. Brian has been president of the Camrose Arts Society for 2 years, facility chairman of the Camrose Performing Arts Center for 2 years, Vice President of the Churchmice Drama Club for 1 year and Stage Manager for over a dozen dinner theatres, lighting technician, sound technician, director of several one act plays and set designer for a children's drama group.

Brian demonstrates commitment and tenacity in all that he does. He has been married for 26 years and with his family, lives in a manner consistent with his belief in self-sufficiency and living lightly on our planet. He grows much of their own food, has built and lives in a passive solar house, and is an avid recycler.

"We’re all about People" means . . .

An organization, business or a community’s greatest asset is the people in that group.  People working together can change the world. Brian believes there is no such thing as a “Self made Man”. Working alongside that man (or woman) was a spouse, a partner, co-workers, employees, volunteers, family and friends, who all made the success possible.

Anything is possible if the people involved can speak their dreams, put shape to a plan and celebrate their success. By getting others to work together more effectively we can join with them in their efforts to make the world a better place.
